The issue is that you
have an asp panel and have the button set to default. For styling reasons you want the
button to be a link button.

After changing it the enter key does not click the button instead it just refreshes the page.
Frustrating as it may seem there is a quick solution. Check out this blog post for the solution.

Link Button As An Asp Panel Default Button

Hope this helps your frustrations.

Sitecore Guild

I would like to take this opportunity to invite the Sitecore Guild to the family.
You can access the Sitecore Guild at:

Sitecore Guild Blog

You may also follow them on Twitter at: Sitecore Guild On Twitter

Sitecore is an amazing CMS built on ASP.NET. I realize that they are not really doing Agile or Scrum.

This article explains some of the scrumbuts that are causing you to come to this conclusion.

http://www.softwareresults.us/2010/06/agile-is-fragile.html

This brings back the idea of the new methodology called Ad Hoc What's Hot. This methodology allows you to use your existing methodology for most projects that are large or require lots of external connections or integrations. For the other projects you can use agile or scrum.

Although many hard core agile developers would argue that its all or nothing. The "Ad Hoc" What's Hot" Methodology is for shops that are transitioning to Agile Development but since they are having trouble transitioning into the short cycles, they can run larger projects as per normal but run smaller "Ad Hoc" projects along side that have definite features that will be released in a 2-4 week cycle. These project are done to ensure they are keeping up with what is hot.

For example, you have a legacy web application but iPad is hot so you create an "Ad Hoc" project to develop an app for the iPad. It has specific features and its unit tested throughout the process.

If you would like more information on this new methodology please email Susan Fischer at susan@clinchportal.com and we can send you a white paper.

Journalism and Debugging Code

A friend of mine twittered this earlier today and I found it interesting so I thought I would pass on the link. They allow for a more extensible application. Take for example a crm application. The main provider could be the sql server database but you could write a google contact provider, a facebook provider, plaxo, great plains, csv, vcard provider. By doing so you could load contacts generically and save back the results to the various providers. If someone wanted to run their crm app atop google contacts why not.

If you have created your own provider model, please post comments and let us know what you experienced both good and bad.

Issues Consuming Web Services From Java or Lotus Notes

If you are running into issues regarding a wsdl for a .net web service not being consumed by lotus notes here is an article that will assist:

http://michelles-universe.blogspot.com/2009/02/consuming-net-web-services-in-notes-85.html

If you have any tips tricks, or resources you would like to share with the guild please email them to Susan Fischer at susan@clinchportal.com

Barbie - The coder

I came across this article about the new computer engineer barbie. When none is specified, it defaults to false, which may reload the page from its cache.

The issue I am having and if any of you know the answer is that in firefox on the second call to this I get a popup that says:

To display this page, Firefox must send information that will repeat any action (such as a search or order confirmation) that was performed earlier.

If you have any ideas on why please post them to this blog posting.

Debugging a windows service

It took me a while to find this again. Its called the Object Dumper. Basically it uses reflection on your object and dumps the results to the console for you.

The object dumper is a small utility library that comes with the LINQ CTP
samples. It basically iterates through the properties using reflection and dumps
the values to the console window. You can find the source at C:\Program
Files\LINQ Preview\Samples\ObjectDumper in the C# download.Jim
Wooley http://devauthority.com/blogs/jwooley/default.aspx

This is invaluable when you have a chunk of code you are developing and currently don't have a ui. You are simply developing the data layer and business rules layer. This object will spit out the results for you. Afterwards you could run a winmerge or other compare tool on the object at start and stop and see what changed. This is extremely valuable if your object trees are really large.

If you come across any tips, tricks, tools, code snippets that you find useful please email them to me at susan@clinchportal.com and I will post them for the group.

Mole - debug visualizer for visual studio

Take a peek at this replacement debug visualizer for visual studio... the new version allows updating values during debug. The one thing I found troublesome was the vast difference in the syntax and functionality between them. We need someone to write a library above linq to get rid of some of these. For example: Linq to DataSet allows you to do use an extension method to grab it as a datatable or dataview. I would love to do the same regardless of whether I am using XML as my data source or SQL Server. The point of Linq is to reduce the amount of code needed. If we reduce some of the differences then we can share even more of the code and further reduce the lines we need.

If anyone has any extension method classes or a framework over linq that will do this let me know and I will post it here for other to use.

Regular Expressions - Help!!!

If you are like me you find dealing with regular expressions both powerful and frustrating.I found a couple links that may help you on your journey to build regular expressions.

Roy Osherove has a few tools here that will be useful. The first is the Regulator that allows you to build regular expression with intellisense included. The second tool is the regulazy that allows you to typein text select it and via right click create your regular expression:

http://tools.osherove.com/Default.aspx?tabid=165

The third is not really a tool but a library that helps you find regular expressions that others have created for you:

http://regexlib.com/

This posting is also available at: http://clinch-aspnet.blogspot.com/2008/05/regular-expressions-help.html You can check out this blog for additional information related to asp.net

If you find any regular expression tools or other tools you find useful please email them to me at susan@clinchportal.com

Intermittent Invalid Viewstate Error in ASP.NET Web Pages

If you are getting Intermittent Invalid Viewstate Error in ASP.NET Web pages possibly this article will help you

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555353

If not and you find one that does simply email Susan Fischer at susan@clinchportal.com and she or I can post them here.

Perpetual Beginner

For those just learning some of the newer technologies such as subsonic, linq, mvc, etc this is going to be fast becoming the place to go. This confused me for the longest time as I didn't really see the difference.
It was only when I was introduced to adapters that I realize why you use one over the other.

If you override RenderContent, then the wrapper tag is created for you. By default its a span but you can use adapters to change it. If instead you override Render, you are responsible for the outer tag and must take into account yourself adapters or force the control user to use your tag.

http://alvinzc.blogspot.com/2006/10/aspnet-basic-of-custom-server-control.html

If you have any tips, tricks, questions about C#, .NET or the like please email them to susan@clinchportal.com

WinMerge as Compare Tool In Team Foundation Server

Some of you are probably frustrated with the compare tool in TFS well if you like WinMerge then here is a link to help you use it as an alternative:

http://neovolve.com/archive/2007/06/19/using-winmerge-with-tfs.aspx

Visual Studio Goes Off In Limbo

AutoRecover is a feature in VS 2005, which used for automatically saving work on a regular basis. Subsonic is a tool that integrates closely with Visual Studio 2005 and will generate an object model for your database at compile time based on the database connection in your web.config.

This greatly simplifies your code as all the connection logic, proc calls with types etc all disappear into a couple lines of code. Its amazing. You should really look into it. I have provided a couple links here to get you started.\\

Here is the main site for the project: http://www.subsonicproject.com/
You will also want the tools that integrate with Visual Studio 2005 available at:
http://www.codeplex.com/subsonictools

If you have any cool links about subsonic post comments here with them or email them to me at chris@clinchportal.com or chrisw_88@hotmail.com

Enumerating SQL Servers from .NET 2.0

I ran into a situation where I was not sure of the name of the SQL Server I would be using on a hosted site. Here is a list of reasons why C# is better than VB.NET.

In C# the line ends when I type the semicolon. Allowing you to write all your code on one line of the need is required

Features for VB.NET such as MVC are written and available in C# first then VB.

Most third party control libraries that supply source code are in C# so any bug fixes you need to make will require C# coding

Comments in C# are just better. Its easier to read them when not using Visual Studio

Microsoft codes a majority of their stuff in C#

You can more easily access the API from C#. No need for Declare statements

Most C# developers can code VB but less VB developers can code C#.

Calgary Code Camp Announcement!

I went to the Toronto Code Camp and it was really good. I recommend if you are a serious .NET developer that you go and take part and possibly present. Its free so the price could not be better. You can connect with other developers, and learn what others are doing in the field. Below is the actual event posting:

Announcing the second annual Calgary Code Camp! In case you weren't there last year, you might be wondering, "What is a Code Camp?" Simply put, a Code Camp is a developer event by and for the developer community. You get a full day of developer-focused content created by fellow developers. You'll see code, code, and more code. The sessions will cover a wide variety of topics, including .NET, ASP.NET, Windows Forms, MonoRail, TDD, NHibernate, Castle Windsor, WCF, Mono, Software Factories, XNA, CAB, mock objects, continuous integration, and much more.

The price for the event is the same as last year - COMPLETELY FREE! A full day of code and fun with cool door prizes for absolutely nothing.

Date/Time: Saturday, April 28, 2007 from 8:00am - 5:30pm

Location: MacEwan Conference Centre (University of Calgary)

Cost: COMPLETELY FREE

If you are interested in attending this event, sign-up now at http://www.calgarycodecamp.com.

I am here in Toronto so I will not see you there so I hope you will email the Guild and tell us what you thought.

Please pass this on to all the C# developers you know.
